Making the difference – in every sense

In 1973 the global fragrance industry came together to form a new international association. Its mission: to represent the collective interests of the industry and promote the safe use and enjoyment of fragrances around the world.

Nearly half a century later, The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) brings together seven multinational companies and 23 national associations in 24 countries across four regions.

Our goal remains to make the difference – in every sense: to create fragrances that bring joy, well-being and color to people’s lives; to support prosperity through jobs and scientific advances; and to act responsibly – protecting consumers through our Code of Practice and IFRA Standards, and respecting our shared environment.

Created by the fragrance industry for the fragrance industry

In the early 1970s, leading fragrance houses recognized the growing scientific and public interest in fragrance safety. Rather than wait for external regulation, they took the initiative to establish a collaborative, self-regulatory platform. IFRA was founded to apply consistent safety principles to fragrance ingredients, balancing consumer enjoyment, innovation, and public trust. This voluntary approach continues to guide the industry today.

Adherence to the IFRA Standards is essential to perfumers’ ongoing ability to create and deliver safe fragrances for consumers. Users must be able to enjoy fragrance products with confidence, and the 51st Amendment is part of the sector’s ongoing efforts to support this mission”
