The IFRA Fragrance Ingredient Lexicon

The IFRA Fragrance Ingredient Glossary (FIG) is a harmonized glossary of positive olfactory descriptors of fragrance ingredients using simple terms and language.

The FIG covers all materials on the IFRA Transparency List (other than functional ingredients not used for odor-giving properties) and includes a primary descriptor and two other descriptors.

Development and Content

The FIG was developed through a global, collaborative effort by a multi-country, multi-company Working Group, representing fragrance houses of all sizes. The team brought together broad industry expertise and led a consultation process open to all IFRA members.

The glossary covers all materials listed on the IFRA Transparency List, except functional ingredients not used for their scent. Each entry includes a primary descriptor and two supporting descriptors, supporting clear and consistent communication across the fragrance value chain.

Use and Governance

The IFRA Fragrance Ingredient Glossary (FIG) is available for download, subject to compliance with the FIG Terms of Use. It has undergone a thorough legal review and adheres to competition law and intellectual property standards. The FIG is an inclusive, collaborative database that is protected by copyright and collectively owned by the fragrance industry.

Use of the FIG is voluntary. Members are encouraged to adopt it or, if they prefer, to develop alternative approaches. Any use of the FIG — whether in part or in full — must credit The International Fragrance Association, in line with the stated terms.
