The IFRA Fragrance Ingredient Lexicon

The IFRA Fra­gran­ce Ingre­dient Glos­sary (FIG) is a har­mo­ni­zed glos­sary of posi­ti­ve olfac­tory des­crip­tors of fra­gran­ce ingre­dients using sim­ple terms and language.

The FIG covers all mate­rials on the IFRA Trans­pa­rency List (other than fun­ctio­nal ingre­dients not used for odor-giving pro­per­ties) and inclu­des a pri­mary des­crip­tor and two other descriptors.

Deve­lop­ment and Content

The FIG was deve­lo­ped through a glo­bal, colla­bo­ra­ti­ve effort by a mul­ti-country, mul­ti-com­pany Wor­king Group, repre­sen­ting fra­gran­ce hou­ses of all sizes. The team brought together broad industry exper­ti­se and led a con­sul­ta­tion pro­cess open to all IFRA members.

The glos­sary covers all mate­rials lis­ted on the IFRA Trans­pa­rency List, except fun­ctio­nal ingre­dients not used for their scent. Each entry inclu­des a pri­mary des­crip­tor and two sup­por­ting des­crip­tors, sup­por­ting clear and con­sis­tent com­mu­ni­ca­tion across the fra­gran­ce value chain.

Use and Governance

The IFRA Fra­gran­ce Ingre­dient Glos­sary (FIG) is avai­la­ble for down­load, sub­ject to com­plian­ce with the FIG Terms of Use. It has under­go­ne a tho­rough legal review and adhe­res to com­pe­ti­tion law and inte­llec­tual pro­perty stan­dards. The FIG is an inclu­si­ve, colla­bo­ra­ti­ve data­ba­se that is pro­tec­ted by copy­right and collec­ti­vely owned by the fra­gran­ce industry.

Use of the FIG is volun­tary. Mem­bers are encou­ra­ged to adopt it or, if they pre­fer, to deve­lop alter­na­ti­ve approa­ches. Any use of the FIG — whether in part or in full — must cre­dit The Inter­na­tio­nal Fra­gran­ce Asso­cia­tion, in line with the sta­ted terms.
